Shed Maintenance Checklist

Prestige Outfitter DIY Cabins for sale in Montana

No matter how much you’ve invested in your shed, performing regular maintenance on it will contribute to its longevity and keep it in good working condition for longer. Even a few simple maintenance tasks done throughout the year can help extend the life of your shed significantly.

If you’re not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ll list off some of the most important shed maintenance tasks you should prioritize.

Check for Leaks and Cracks

First, you should frequently check your shed for leaks, cracks, or holes that could expose the interior to the elements or allow unwanted visitors to enter.

This is especially important to complete each fall before the long winter season or before a big storm. Reviewing the roof, walls, and windows for damage shouldn’t take long; however, fixing any issues proactively will help you avoid more serious problems and unwanted surprises later on.

Lubricate Handles and Hinges

Lubricating the door handles and hinges as needed keeps your shed functional and secure. While a relatively simple task, it’s easy to neglect. However, stiff or stuck handles and hinges can be frustrating to use.

If the handles and locks are not working properly, it might be difficult to access the inside of your shed or pose security issues. So, take a few moments every once in a while to give them a good spray with a lubricant like WD-40.

Pest Control

If you’re not careful, ants, rodents, and other insects and vermin can cause damage to your shed and its contents if they make it their home.

Aside from keeping the general area clean and patching up any holes or cracks, you may consider using traps or repellants to deter them from entering, which you’ll need to monitor throughout the year.

Sweep Interior Floors

Every month or so, give the interior floor a quick sweep to remove any leaves, debris, or other build-up that has accumulated inside the shed.

This simple yet effective task will help you keep mold, mildew, and moss from growing, which can damage and deteriorate the shed and any items stored inside if not addressed promptly.

Wash the Exterior

It’s equally as important to keep the exterior of the shed clear from grime, stains, and vegetation. This will keep the shed looking nice and prevent mildew, vines, or sap from permanently damaging the siding.

Once or twice a year, as the weather permits, wash off the outside walls of the shed with a hose or power washer. Before doing so, make sure all doors and windows are completely closed and sealed to avoid getting the items inside wet.

Re-Seal Windows and Doors

Each season, examine the seals around the doors and windows in your shed to look for any leaking or cracks.

Even small openings can allow moisture into the shed, which, combined with the dark interior, can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Re-apply caulking anywhere you suspect a leak or draft to keep the interior of your shed sealed off from the elements.
